For two weeks, Bourges hosted three international work camps bringing together around fifty young people from 15 countries. Led by InfoJeunes Centre-Val de Loire, in partnership with the City of Bourges and Bourges 2028, the initiative gave participants from around the world the opportunity to share a collective experience combining community engagement, discovering the local area and intercultural exchange.
Decorating a future youth community centre, creating a collective mural at the Gazélec sports site, helping preserve the local marshlands… Beyond the tangible outcomes, these projects above all created opportunities for young people from very different backgrounds to connect with one another.
For Hannah, a participant from Ukraine, it was the moments shared together that will stay with her. An evening at the Bourges funfair brought back memories of her childhood and, for a few rides, allowed her to rediscover a sense of carefree enjoyment. She also recalls the final evening of the work camp with emotion, when each participant wrote a message or made a drawing for the others, turning a simple wall of envelopes into a mosaic of memories and thoughtful gestures.
For Libra, who came from Spain, the most memorable part was the connections forged throughout the work camp. Beyond the painting project they worked on together, he remembers the conversations, shared laughter and moments of connection that shaped those two weeks. In his view, the mural became a reflection of this meeting between people from different cultures, where every contribution found its place thanks to the group’s openness and kindness.
At Bourges 2028, we believe that new imaginaries emerge from the movement of people, ideas and stories. These international work camps are a concrete example: they show that cooperation is built not only through the projects we create together, but also through the encounters that these projects make possible.
