Rights for rivers, waterways and forests

In Bourges, the Bifurcations bookstore hosted Camille de Toledo on Tuesday, February 10, for a warm and engaging discussion and book signing around The International of Rivers — the title of his narrative and a major artistic project he is leading as part of Bourges European Capital of Culture 2028.

A writer, playwright, and research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Nantes, Camille de Toledo has long been engaged with the issue of recognising the rights of nature. Through his work and public positions, he explores the possibility of granting legal personhood to rivers, waterways, and forests, enabling them to assert their rights as living entities.

This event offered a moment for reflection and dialogue around these fundamental issues, inviting the audience to rethink the relationships our societies maintain with natural environments and the living world. An approach that strongly resonates with the ambitions carried by Bourges 2028 since its inception.

By 2028, as an associate artist, Camille de Toledo will continue developing The International of Rivers, one of the flagship projects of Bourges European Capital of Culture, conceived as a space for creation, debate, and experimentation around the rights of living beings.
