The Matrix: A year of sharing and creativity together!

Published on Thursday 30 January 2025

As 2025 begins, The Matrix remains committed to its mission of uniting and strengthening ties between human-scale cities, convinced that collaboration is the key to developing solutions that benefit everyone. This network, which places a strong emphasis on sharing resources and artistic initiatives, is establishing itself as a model for pooling efforts to support projects with a European reach.

The coming year promises to be particularly dynamic. One of the Matrix’s key goals is to make its flagship projects replicable. Replicability—the ability of projects to adapt to different locations—is at the heart of the network’s strategy. Among its standout initiatives, the Metro Europa project is reaching a new milestone. After its launch in Bourges, it will next be unveiled in Avignon, Terre de Culture 2025, this March. Through a route designed for walking, cycling, or public transport, the city will come alive with virtual metro lines, each station dedicated to a work of art or a cultural event.

The Matrix is also growing, with the addition of new member cities. Four towns from the Centre-Val de Loire region have recently joined the network: Aubigny-sur-Nère, the historic stronghold of the Stuarts; Saint-Amand-Montrond, known as the City of Arts and Crafts; Saint-Florent-sur-Cher, renowned for its château; and Sancerre, internationally recognized for its vineyards and winemaking heritage. These new voices will enrich discussions and expand opportunities within La Matrice, further diversifying its initiatives.

Elise Gousseau-Brisset, Secretary General of Bourges 2028, highlights the strategic importance of the coming year for the network’s future:

2025 is a pivotal year for the Matrix: member cities will formalize their partnership through 2029, marking a new chapter for the European Capital of Culture and its sister cities—the chapter of legacy. What must not be overlooked is that Bourges 2028 is a project designed for lasting transformation. What we are building with our partners today must live on beyond 2028 and continue to create tangible change in the daily lives of residents!

April 18 will mark an important milestone. During the first seminar dedicated to La Matrice, two representatives from the network’s sister cities will be appointed to advocate for human-scale cities within the board of directors. This is yet another demonstration of Bourges 2028’s core belief: by sharing expertise and responsibilities, and by making decisions collectively, our regions will shape the future.

More than just a collaborative network, the Matrix is a powerful illustration of culture’s ability to bring people together. It proves that even in smaller cities, it is possible to develop sustainable, replicable, and creative solutions. In 2025, the Matrix will continue to serve as a catalyst—starting with its first major event of the year in Angoulême, during the 52nd Comic Book Festival. This will be a unique opportunity to celebrate the power of art in fostering connections and inspiring new projects.

There is no doubt that an exciting year lies ahead for the Matrix!
