For this first edition of CR!, 185 applications were submitted from across the Centre–Val de Loire region, spanning an impressive range of projects—from music and dance to ceramics, photography, and even scientific research.
Amateurs and professionals alike, associations and independent artists: a wide diversity of profiles answered the call with ambitious, inspiring projects capable of making a real impact on our region.All driven by a shared determination to join us in inventing and shaping the territories of tomorrow!

CR! supports artistic projects at the heart of the Matrix cities. Project leaders from Nevers, Angoulême, Avignon, Tours and beyond will receive tailored support and funding to bring their creations to life.
This unique openness allows human-scale territories to work together in reinventing European imaginaries.

Several elements make this initiative truly unique. First, its scale: launching three years ahead of the title year and mobilising 400 participants for an Academy lasting dozens of hours is unprecedented. Then, the level of support:average funding reaching tens of thousands of euros, at a time when most European Capital of Culture calls for projects remain largely symbolic. Finally, the logic of integration: the 93 funded or labelled award-winners are not an add-on. They take part in shaping the artistic programme itself, on an equal footing with international artists.

What strikes me is the sense of novelty introduced by this CR! Too often, cultural policies reproduce the same top-down patterns: a framework is defined, and then artists and project leaders are asked to fit into it. Here, we have done the opposite. We started from the territory, from those who bring it to life. Each project leader was welcomed on an equal footing, without hierarchy or preconceived notions of legitimacy.
C’est à nos yeux une nouveauté : reconnaître que la création et l’imaginaire appartiennent à toutes et tous, et non à quelques institutions. Conduire une capitale européenne de la culture c’est d’abord innover. C’est l’essence même de Bourges 2028.
