At the end of 2022, Bourges 2028 invited residents and students to take part in creating the new 2023 edition of Métro Europa.
Through a series of agoras organised by the bid team, volunteer participants became authors, thinkers, architects and makers of four new metro lines, guided by a spirit of openness to Europe. Supported by cultural actors from across the region, and within a context of learning and European networking, residents imagined future lines and stations, reflected on their programming, and even named them.
Métro Europa is a playful and ironic take on dynamic, low-carbon itineraries to be explored on foot, by bike, scooter, or by bus powered by electricity and natural gas. It is a self-guided route along an imaginary “metro” line, linking places selected through citizen decision-making. These lines highlight local actors and sites within the city, as well as municipalities across the Bourges Plus metropolitan area—sometimes overlooked or hidden places, presented through thematic narratives connected to their European dimension.
With this project, Bourges 2028 pushes citizen participation even further, making residents co-creators of Métro Europa 2023. They know better than anyone the symbolic sites in need of renewal, the secret routes, and the places that truly define Bourges—making them essential experts in shaping the project.
Thanks to their involvement, the Berry metro offers a European, ecological, cultural and tourist journey across four lines, each featuring nine stations and covering an average distance of 2,000 metres per line.
